1.Natural History Museum

Switzerland's largest natural history museum, in the Malagnou district, has floors of lifelike dioramas of Swiss and world wildlife, minerals and fossils, and an exhibition on the history of the Earth. Entry is free, and it is one of the best rainy-day options for families.

Start with the ground-floor dioramas of Swiss animals, which young children enjoy most.

4.Mouettes water taxis and lake cruises

The small yellow Mouettes Genevoises boats shuttle across the harbour between the Pâquis, the Jardin Anglais and the Eaux-Vives on standard public-transport tickets. For a longer trip, CGN's fleet, including Belle Époque paddle steamers, sails along the lake to Nyon, Lausanne, Montreux and the French village of Yvoire.

Use a Mouette crossing as a cheap mini-cruise with a close view of the Jet d'Eau.

Landmark · Eaux-Vives

5.Jet d'Eau

Geneva's symbol is a fountain that pumps about 500 litres of lake water a second to a height of around 140 metres from the end of the Jetée des Eaux-Vives. A walkway leads out along the jetty to its base, where the spray often drifts over visitors. It is lit after dark and switched off in strong wind or freezing weather.

Walk out to the jetty's lighthouse when the wind blows away from the path, and see it lit up from the Pâquis side after dark.

6.Jardin Anglais and the Flower Clock

The lakeside English Garden at the foot of the Old Town is home to the Flower Clock, created in 1955 as a tribute to Geneva's watchmakers, its face planted with thousands of seasonal flowers. The park looks across the harbour to the Jet d'Eau and the Pâquis waterfront.

Walk from the clock along the left-bank quay to the Jet d'Eau, about 15 minutes.

The largest park on the left bank slopes down to the lake from an 18th-century villa, with old trees, lawns and a celebrated rose garden of several hundred varieties at its best in June. It joins the Parc des Eaux-Vives, making a long green walk along the shore.

Visit in June for the roses, and pack a picnic for the lawns facing the lake.

Where families should stay

Eaux-Vives

Eaux-Vives stretches east from the Jardin Anglais along the left shore, taking in the Jet d'Eau, the Baby-Plage swimming area and the large lakeside parks of La Grange and Eaux-Vives. Inland, its streets have bakeries, markets and restaurants popular with locals, and the Eaux-Vives station on the Léman Express gives fast cross-border rail links.

Good
Lakeside parks and swimming; Residential, local feel; Walkable to the Old Town
Watch out
Fewer hotels than the right bank; Busy roads along the quay
Nearby
Jet d'Eau, Parc La Grange, Jardin Anglais, Genève-Plage

Family travel tips

  • Baby-Plage on the left bank and Genève-Plage further along have shallow areas suited to children in summer.
  • The Natural History Museum and CERN's Science Gateway are free and work well on rainy days.
  • Children under 6 travel free on public transport, and the hotel transport card covers families.
  • The botanical garden's animal enclosures and greenhouses make an easy free morning.
  • In summer, pack swimsuits for the lakeside fountains and paddling areas along the quays.

Day trips for families

  • Montreux and Chillon Castle (About 1 hour 10 minutes by train) — Montreux's flower-lined promenade, with its statue of Freddie Mercury, leads to the medieval Chillon Castle on a rock in the lake, made famous by Lord Byron's poem.
  • Annecy (About 1 hour by bus) — Across the French border, Annecy's old town has canals, flower-hung bridges and the island prison of the Palais de l'Isle, beside a clear Alpine lake popular for swimming and cycling.
  • Chamonix (About 1 hour 30 minutes by bus) — The French mountain town at the foot of Mont Blanc is the base for the Aiguille du Midi cable car to about 3,800 metres and the rack railway to the Mer de Glace glacier.
  • Yvoire (About 1 hour 30 minutes by boat) — A small medieval village on the French shore of the lake, with stone houses covered in flowers, a castle and the Garden of the Five Senses.
  • Gruyères (About 2 hours by train) — A hilltop medieval town with a castle, the HR Giger Museum and a show dairy where Gruyère cheese is made, set below the pre-Alps.
  • Mont Salève (About 45 minutes by bus and cable car) — Geneva's 'balcony', just across the French border, is reached by a cable car to about 1,100 metres.
