Quick answer

Christchurch's nightlife is concentrated in the rebuilt central city, with riverside bars, craft-beer taprooms and cocktail bars rather than big clubs. Weekends are busiest, and many bars quieten by midnight on weeknights. The main areas are The Terrace (Oxford Terrace), Victoria Street and Lyttelton.

What to drink

  • Flat white — Espresso with velvety steamed milk and a thin layer of microfoam; café culture is serious, and most cafés roast or source specialty beans.
  • Waipara Valley wine — The Waipara Valley north of the city produces aromatic Riesling, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc from cool-climate vineyards.
  • Canterbury craft beer — Christchurch has a strong craft-beer scene of small breweries making hoppy pale ales, stouts and sours, many with taprooms.

Evenings through the year

Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. January has the warmest evenings, with lows around 12°C (54°F).

Getting home late

  • Walking — Most central sights, from the Botanic Gardens to Cathedral Square and the Riverside Market, are within a 15-minute walk of each other on flat ground.
  • Bus — A Metrocard gives lower fares than cash and caps what you pay per day and week.
  • Tram — Restored heritage trams run a central-city loop past Cathedral Square, New Regent Street and the Art Gallery; tickets are hop-on, hop-off sightseeing passes rather than commuter fares.

Late-night bites

  • Mince and cheese pie — Bakeries across the city and in towns on the road to Akaroa, Kaikōura and Arthur's Pass.

Staying safe at night

Christchurch is generally relaxed for visitors. New Zealand is seismically active, so learn the 'Drop, Cover, Hold' drill; the sun's UV is very strong, and beaches can have rip currents, so swim between the flags.
