Money-saving tips

  • Stay in Mount Pleasant or North Charleston for markedly lower hotel rates with free parking, and drive or ride-hail into town.
  • The Battery, Rainbow Row, Waterfront Park, the City Market, Angel Oak and the Ravenel Bridge walk are all free.
  • Use city garages rather than hotel valet parking, which can add a large sum per night.
  • January, February and August are usually the lowest-priced months; avoid Spoleto and spring weekends if price matters.
  • Lunch menus at well-known restaurants are often much cheaper than dinner.
  • Ride the free DASH shuttles around the peninsula instead of taxis.

Free things to do

  • The Battery and White Point Garden — The raised sea-wall promenade at the tip of the peninsula looks across the harbour to Fort Sumter, with mansions such as the Edmondston-Alston House lining East Battery.
  • Rainbow Row — Thirteen pastel-painted Georgian row houses along East Bay Street, built as merchants' houses with shops on the ground floor in the 18th century, form Charleston's most recognisable street front.
  • Charleston City Market — Four blocks of open-sided sheds run from Meeting Street to East Bay Street, with the 1841 Greek Revival Market Hall at the head.
  • Joe Riley Waterfront Park — This harbour-front park along Concord Street has the Pineapple Fountain, where children paddle in summer, a pier lined with swinging benches and lawns looking towards Patriots Point and the Ravenel Bridge.
  • Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge walk — The cable-stayed bridge over the Cooper River, opened in 2005, has a separate pedestrian and bike lane about 4 km long.
  • Angel Oak — A Southern live oak on Johns Island, about 20 km from downtown, estimated to be several hundred years old, with limbs that sprawl along the ground and shade a huge area.
