Quick answer

Brussels nightlife centres on beer cafés, cocktail bars and squares full of terraces rather than mega-clubs, though it also has a respected techno and electronic music scene. The main areas are Saint-Géry, Impasse de la Fidélité and the Lower Town, Place Eugène Flagey and Châtelain and Parvis de Saint-Gilles.

Nightlife tips

  • Belgian beers are strong; pace yourself with lighter options such as a gueuze or a pils.
  • The metro stops running around midnight; check night bus options or use a taxi after that.
  • Bars often stay open until the last customers leave, but clubs only fill up after midnight.

What to drink

  • Lambic and gueuze — Lambic is beer fermented with wild yeasts from the air of the Senne valley around Brussels; gueuze blends young and old lambic into a dry, sparkling, sour beer, and kriek adds cherries.

Evenings through the year

Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. July has the warmest evenings, with lows around 14°C (57°F).

Getting home late

  • Metro — Tap a contactless bank card or phone on the validator at the gate; it charges the standard single fare.
  • Tram — Trams are the best way to reach Ixelles, Saint-Gilles, Avenue Louise and the Bois de la Cambre, and run on the same STIB tickets.
  • Walking — The Grand-Place, Sainte-Catherine, the Sablon and the Upper Town museums are all within about 15 minutes' walk of each other.
  • Bus — STIB buses fill gaps in the tram and metro network, and express bus lines link Brussels Airport with the European Quarter.
  • Taxi — Licensed taxis wait at stations and ranks, and ride-hailing apps operate in the city.

Late-night bites

  • Belgian frites — Friteries (fritkots) such as the long-established stands at Place Jourdan in the European Quarter and near the Bourse.
  • Grey shrimp croquettes — Seafood restaurants around Sainte-Catherine and traditional brasseries.
  • Speculoos — Maison Dandoy on Rue au Beurre near the Grand-Place, baking since 1829, and supermarkets everywhere.

Staying safe at night

Brussels is generally safe for visitors, but pickpocketing is common around Brussels-Midi and Brussels-Nord stations, on Rue Neuve and on busy metro lines. The areas around the big stations can feel uncomfortable late at night, so take a taxi if arriving after dark.

Sainte-Catherine and Dansaert

Around the long Marché aux Poissons square, where the old harbour basins were filled in, seafood restaurants and oyster bars serve fish and grey shrimp. Rue Antoine Dansaert has Belgian designer boutiques, and the bars of Saint-Géry are a few minutes away. It is central but feels more local than the Grand-Place.
