  • Altitude makes alcohol hit harder; drink water between rounds.
  • Never accept drinks from strangers and keep an eye on your glass, as drink-spiking is a documented risk.

What to drink

  • Chocolate santafereño — A cup of hot chocolate served with a slice of fresh cheese, which you drop into the cup to melt, plus bread or almojábanas.
  • Aguapanela — A simple drink of panela (unrefined cane sugar) dissolved in hot water, often with lime or cheese; a warming staple on cold Bogotá days.
  • Chicha — A fermented corn drink with Muisca roots, sour and lightly alcoholic. It was banned for decades in the 20th century and is now a symbol of La Candelaria.

Evenings through the year

Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. January has the warmest evenings, with lows around 7°C (45°F).

Getting home late

  • Bus — Buy a TuLlave card at stations and avoid rush hours (about 6–9am and 5–8pm), when pickpocketing is common.
  • Taxi — Ask your hotel or restaurant to call a taxi, or use an app, rather than hailing one on the street, especially at night.
  • Ride-hailing — Ride-hailing apps are widely used and give upfront prices; pick-ups are quick in the north and Chapinero.
  • Walking — La Candelaria, Zona G, Zona T and Usaquén are walkable, but distances between districts are long and the altitude makes hills tiring.

Late-night bites

  • Empanadas — Street stands, bakeries and TransMilenio station kiosks.
  • Tropical fruit — Paloquemao market, street vendors and juice stands.

Staying safe at night

Phone snatching and pickpocketing are common on TransMilenio, around La Candelaria and in busy areas; keep valuables hidden. Use app taxis or called cabs, especially at night, and avoid quiet streets in the centre after dark. Altitude can cause headaches and shortness of breath for the first day or two.
