The 16 best things to do

Castle · Bodrum Town

1.Bodrum Castle and the Museum of Underwater Archaeology

The Knights Hospitaller began building the Castle of St Peter in the early 15th century, partly with stone taken from the ruined Mausoleum. Its towers, named after the knights' national tongues, now house the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, with the Bronze Age Uluburun shipwreck, the Glass Wreck Hall and amphorae from the seabed.

Allow at least two hours and visit in the morning, when the courtyards are cooler and quieter.

2.Mausoleum at Halicarnassus

The tomb of the Carian ruler Mausolus, completed in the 4th century BC, was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and gave us the word 'mausoleum'. Earthquakes destroyed it, and today the site holds foundations, scattered column drums and a small display with models of the original.

Visit the castle first; many of the Mausoleum's stones were built into its walls.
