Azores neighbourhoods in detail

$$ · Best for first-timers, food lovers, nightlife and budget

Ponta Delgada

The archipelago's largest town has a seafront promenade, the three-arched Portas da Cidade, Baroque churches and a marina where most whale-watching boats depart. It has the widest choice of hotels and restaurants, and is about 30–45 minutes' drive from Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo and the north coast.

Good
Most restaurants and hotels; Close to the airport; Whale-watching boats leave from here
Watch out
Car needed for most sights; Fewer views than the rural areas
Nearby
Portas da Cidade, Ponta Delgada marina, Pineapple greenhouses, Sete Cidades

$$$ · Best for couples, quiet stays and families

Furnas

In a volcanic caldera in eastern São Miguel, Furnas has bubbling fumaroles in the village, the thermal pools of Terra Nostra Garden and Poça da Dona Beija, and the lakeside where cozido is cooked in the ground. Staying overnight lets you use the hot springs in the evening after day-trippers leave.

Good
Hot springs on the doorstep; Quiet evenings; Unique volcanic setting
Watch out
Smell of sulphur; Damp, misty climate; About 45 minutes from Ponta Delgada
Nearby
Terra Nostra Garden, Lagoa das Furnas, Poça da Dona Beija, Gorreana tea plantation

$$ · Best for solo travellers, beach and budget

Ribeira Grande

São Miguel's second town, on the north coast, has a historic centre of Baroque churches, the Arquipélago contemporary arts centre and black-sand surf beaches such as Santa Bárbara. Caldeira Velha's hot pools and the road up to Lagoa do Fogo are close by.

Good
Surf and black-sand beaches; Central for the island; Local, uncrowded feel
Watch out
Cloudier than the south coast; Fewer restaurants than Ponta Delgada
Nearby
Santa Bárbara beach, Caldeira Velha, Lagoa do Fogo, Arquipélago arts centre

$$ · Best for families, beach and quiet stays

Vila Franca do Campo

São Miguel's first capital sits opposite the Ilhéu de Vila Franca, a sunken crater islet with a round natural lagoon reached by boat in summer. The town is known for queijadas, small sweet cheese tarts, and has a marina and a calm seafront.

Good
Sunny south coast; Between Ponta Delgada and Furnas; Islet swimming in summer
Watch out
Quiet at night; Limited hotel choice
Nearby
Ilhéu de Vila Franca, Furnas, Água d'Alto beach

$$ · Best for culture, couples and food lovers

Angra do Heroísmo

Angra's grid of streets, laid out in the 16th century as a stopover for ships from the Americas and Asia, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with pastel townhouses, churches and the São João Baptista fortress on Monte Brasil. It is Terceira's base for exploring Algar do Carvão and the Biscoitos lava pools.

Good
Handsome, walkable historic town; Strong local festival culture; Good restaurants
Watch out
Fewer international flights than Ponta Delgada; Car needed for the interior
Nearby
Monte Brasil, Algar do Carvão, Biscoitos natural pools, Praia da Vitória

$$ · Best for couples, quiet stays and culture

Horta

Horta's marina is a classic Atlantic stopover for yachts, whose crews paint their boats' names and logos on the harbour walls for luck. Peter Café Sport is the sailors' bar, and the town looks straight across the channel to the cone of Mount Pico. Ferries to Pico take about 30 minutes.

Good
Maritime character; Gateway to Pico and São Jorge; Views of Mount Pico
Watch out
Small and quiet; Limited flights
Nearby
Horta marina, Capelinhos, Caldeira do Faial, Pico ferry

$$ · Best for quiet stays, couples and food lovers

Pico Island

Pico is dominated by its 2,351-metre volcano, with Madalena as the main port and Lajes do Pico as the historic whaling village and whale-watching base. Its UNESCO-listed vineyards, small plots walled with black basalt, produce Verdelho wines, and lava-rock swimming pools line the coast.

Good
Dramatic volcanic scenery; Wine and whale-watching; Very peaceful
Watch out
Few restaurants and late-night options; Weather can hide the mountain for days
Nearby
Mount Pico, Pico vineyards, Lajes do Pico, Madalena

$$ · Best for quiet stays, couples and solo travellers

Flores

The westernmost island, on the North American plate, is the greenest and wettest of the Azores, with dozens of waterfalls, crater lakes and the Rocha dos Bordões basalt columns. Santa Cruz das Flores has the airport, and boats run to tiny Corvo in summer.

Good
Wild, uncrowded scenery; Superb hiking; Remote atmosphere
Watch out
Hard to reach and weather-dependent flights; Very limited services
Nearby
Poço da Ribeira do Ferreiro, Rocha dos Bordões, Fajã Grande, Corvo
