Ponsonby

Ponsonby is Auckland's best-known dining and shopping street, lined with Victorian and Edwardian wooden villas, cafés, wine bars and design shops. Ponsonby Central gathers several eateries under one roof. It is about 20 minutes' walk or a short bus ride west of the centre, with quieter accommodation in the side streets.

Good
Many of the city's best cafés and restaurants; Leafy, character streets; Lively in the evening without being rowdy
Watch out
Limited hotels; mostly apartments and B&Bs; Hilly walk from the city centre
Nearby
Ponsonby Central, Karangahape Road, Western Park

Romantic day trips

  • Waiheke Island (About 40 minutes by ferry) — Vineyards, olive groves and white-sand bays such as Onetangi make Waiheke Auckland's favourite escape.
  • Matakana and Goat Island (About 1 hour by car) — Matakana village has a Saturday farmers' market, wineries and cafés, and nearby Goat Island became New Zealand's first marine reserve in 1975, where snapper and other fish swim close to shore for snorkellers.

For dinner

Share local specialities such as Fish and chips, Green-lipped mussels and Ika mata. Public holidays may add a surcharge of around 10–15% to restaurant bills; it should be shown on the menu.
