What to drink
- Atol de elote — A warm, thick drink of fresh sweetcorn, milk, sugar and cinnamon, served in a cup — welcome on cool Antigua evenings.
- Antigua coffee — Coffee from the Antigua valley grows at altitude in volcanic soil and is a recognised origin with its own designation. Many cafés roast their own beans and serve pour-overs alongside espresso.

Getting home late
- Walking — Avenidas run north–south and calles east–west; addresses use 'Norte', 'Sur', 'Oriente' and 'Poniente' relative to the square.
- Tuk-tuk — Agree the fare before you get in.
- Bus — Keep bags on your lap and valuables out of sight on chicken buses.
- Taxi — Taxis are available for longer trips and night journeys; hotels can call trusted drivers for airport transfers.
Late-night bites
- Tostadas — Weekend evening stalls in the plaza in front of La Merced and around the market.
Staying safe at night
Antigua's centre is well patrolled by tourist police, but pickpocketing happens in the market and on chicken buses. Walk viewpoint trails and quiet streets in daylight and in company, and hike volcanoes only with established guides.
- Emergency number
