Solo travel tips

  • Join group tours to Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy, which are much cheaper than private trips and sociable.
  • Hostels around Panfilov Park and Zhibek Zholy are central and good for meeting other travellers.
  • Hike popular trails like Kok Zhaylau at weekends when other walkers are around, and tell someone your route.
  • Learn a few Russian phrases; English is spoken in tourist businesses but less widely elsewhere.
  • Use ride-hailing apps at night rather than unmarked taxis.

Abay and Republic Square

The area around Republic Square has the Independence Monument, the former government buildings and the Central State Museum a short ride away on Furmanov and Satpayev streets. It is a quieter, more formal part of the centre with mid-range hotels, close to the Golden Square restaurants.

Good
Central but calmer; Mid-range hotel prices; Easy taxi access to the museums
Watch out
Wide avenues can feel empty; Fewer cafés than the Golden Square

Meeting people

  • Green Bazaar tasting — Walk the meat, dairy and dried-fruit halls of the Green Bazaar, tasting kazy, kurt, honey and Korean salads before choosing a picnic for the mountains.
  • Kazakh dastarkhan dinner — Order a shared table of beshbarmak, kazy, baursak and tea at a Kazakh restaurant to experience the hospitality spread called the dastarkhan.
  • Golden Square — Cocktail bars, wine bars and pubs on side streets around Kabanbay Batyr, Kunaev and Abylai Khan.
  • Al-Farabi Avenue — Upscale lounges, hotel bars and rooftop terraces with views of the city lights.

Sensible precautions

Mountain weather changes quickly, so carry layers and water on hikes and check conditions before heading to high altitude. Winter smog can affect people with breathing conditions, and ticks are a risk in the foothills in spring and early summer.

Staying connected
Mobile data is fast and cheap; local SIM cards and eSIMs are easy to buy, and coverage drops in the mountains.
