Food and drink to take home

Edible souvenirs travel best when they are dry or sealed: consider Raicilla, Tejuino, Tequila and Coconut and fruit cups. Mezcal and raicilla bars in the Zona Romántica, where tasting flights are often offered. Check your home country's rules on bringing food and drink back.

Paying and bargaining

Prices are in MXN. Tip 10–15% in restaurants, 20 pesos or so per bag for porters, and tip boat crews, guides and water-taxi drivers who help with luggage. Grocery baggers and petrol station attendants expect small change.

  • Cover swimwear when walking away from the beach, especially near the church and in shops.
  • Bargain politely at the Río Cuale market, but not in galleries or shops with fixed prices.
  • Pay in pesos and use bank ATMs inside branches or shopping centres.

When to shop

Shops and markets are quietest in September; the busiest months are December–March.

  • November: Festival Gourmet International — guest chefs in local restaurants (usually November)
