Getting around Pittsburgh

Public transport, passes, airport connections and when a car makes sense.

Quick answer

Downtown, the Strip District and the North Shore are walkable and linked by bridges, but Pittsburgh's hills and rivers make other neighbourhoods feel further than they look. Pittsburgh Regional Transit runs buses, the T light rail and the Monongahela Incline. Not for a city break; buses, the T, inclines and rideshares cover the main sights.

Ways to get around

Bus

Pittsburgh Regional Transit buses are the main public transport, with frequent routes from downtown to Oakland, Shadyside and Lawrenceville, plus dedicated busways.

Tram

The T light rail runs from downtown under the Allegheny to the North Shore stadiums and south through Station Square to the South Hills.

The T is handiest for game days and Station Square; most neighbourhoods are reached by bus.

Cable car

The Duquesne and Monongahela inclines climb Mount Washington from the riverbank; the Monongahela Incline is part of the public transit system.

Walking

Downtown, the Strip District and the North Shore are close together and connected by pedestrian-friendly bridges, though hills and steps elsewhere are steep.

Cycling

The Three Rivers Heritage Trail follows both banks of the rivers, and the POGOH bike-share system has stations in central neighbourhoods.

Ride-hailing

Uber and Lyft are widely used and often faster than buses for crossing between hilly neighbourhoods.

From the airport

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) is about 30 km west of downtown. The 28X Airport Flyer bus runs to downtown and Oakland in about 40–60 minutes. Taxis and rideshares take about 25–35 minutes outside rush hour, longer when the Fort Pitt Tunnel backs up.

Do you need a car?

Not for a city break; buses, the T, inclines and rideshares cover the main sights. Rent a car for Fallingwater, Ohiopyle and the Laurel Highlands.
